Take the same route as the remains of the Apostle Santiago on your trip to Compostela. Navigate through a natural landscape of great beauty. Discover mills, fountains, chapels and monasteries. Walk through forests, vineyards and beaches. Tour the only maritime-river Via Crucis in the world, where you can see the 17 centenary cruises that identify this Camino de Santiago as the “Translatio”, the ORIGIN OF ALL ROADS.
This “Spiritual Variant” unites two Jacobean Paths: the Portuguese Way and the “Sea Route”, the Origin of all paths. In the year 44 after Christ, the Ría de Arousa was crossed by the ship carrying the body of Santiago Apostle. His remains were transferred by his disciples, who “led by an angel and led by a star arrived on the coast of Galicia and climbed the river Ulla until Iria Flavia (current village of Padrón).
1st Stage: Pontevedra – Armenteira (19.6 km)
After crossing the city of Pontevedra, following the Portuguese Way, at 2 km we find a turnoff to the left. At this point begins the “SPIRITUAL VARIANTE” that runs through Poio and Combarro until reaching the Monastery of Armenteira, in a very quiet rural enclave in the mountains. We can spend the night and rest at the lodge after having traveled 21 Km.
Just under 1 km from the Monastery of Armenteira, we can find the pilgrim hostel of A Armenteria de Meis, an exclusive public hostel for pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago with credentials, managed by the town hall of this town.
It was inaugurated in 2017, in a renovated building, near the Armenteira Public school. It is an accessible hostel for people with reduced mobility.

2nd Stage: A Armenteira – Vilanova de Arousa (23.6 Km)
From Armenteira to Pontearnelas the pilgrim travels “The Stone and Water Route” that runs through a natural landscape of great beauty. Walking under the shade of the trees we will find old water mills that rest on the banks of the river. Orchards and vineyards indicate that we approach the Arousa estuary. After having traveled 24 km we reach the beaches and the town of Vilanova.
Almost at the entrance of Vilanova de Arousa, we will find the pilgrim hostel of Vilanova de Arousa is an exclusive public hostel for pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago with credentials, managed by the town hall of this town.
Opened in 2013, the Vilanova de Arousa pilgrim hostel is located within the space of the former municipal toy library, located in the multipurpose hall of the City Hall.

3rd Stage: Vilanova de Arousa – Pontecesures (28 km)
We will make the journey between Vilanova de Arousa and Pontecesures in a boat for pilgrims (it can also be done on foot traveling 28 km of low difficulty). We will cross the Ría de Arousa and ascend the Ulla River recalling the trip made by the remains of the Apostle Santiago, La Translatio. (approx. 1 hour) We will be able to contemplate the mussel culture in the waters of our estuary and we will cross the only Maritime-fluvial Via Crucis in the world in which we will discover 17 centenary cruises that identify this road to Santiago as the ORIGIN OF ALL ROADS. In Pontecesures we resume the Portuguese Way.
